Chico California Photographer: Fridays with Katelyn- Decor Shop Favorites & Inspiration

If you’ve been following me on social media at all or know me well, you know that I’m pretty obsessed with decorating! I seriously just LOVE it. It is therapeutic for me to express my creativity in my home. I find so much passion in it and I am continually thinking of new ideas and ways to improve our home and personalize it even more. But we all know sometimes it’s so hard to find that perfect item you’re looking for and honestly often you may have no idea where to even begin looking for it!

I’m here to tell you that although yes, decorating your home can seem overwhelming and you don’t know where to start, it doesn’t always have to be! I’ve found a few core shops that are my go-to’s and with a combination of the few I usually can create the “look” I imagine in my head. And I also know that decorating your home can seem expensive…but it doesn’t have to be! I will occasionally splurge on something that is worth spending the money on quality that I KNOW will last a long time and be a “staple” piece in our home. But that is rare! I usually piece together items from different stores to create the look I like on a budget πŸ™‚

With that said, I thought it would be fun to share my favorite places to go for home decor items/furniture/decor inspiration and such for the #owenshappyhome! I truly have no idea if any of you would even care to know this, haha! Maybe some of this info I’ll be sharing is a no-brainer (#target). But on the other hand, maybe I’ll share something that could be helpful to you in the future! And since it’s a topic I’m obsessed with, it’s worth sharing…again…and again πŸ˜‰

Okay, so before we bought our little 1948 fixer upper cottage I remember thinking to myself, one day when we have our own home I want to find items for our home from antique stores & t.j maxx, haha. I knew that I could find quality items from antique stores and inexpensive fun decor things from stores like tj maxx, ross, etc. And when the time rolled around for us to move in, I definitely did a lot of that! {Disclaimer: you do not need to own your home to have fun with decorating!} We lived in apartments for several years before moving into our home and I had fun with decorating in every one! Okay, now that that is out of the way πŸ˜‰

My absolute favorite place to “hunt” for home decor & furniture is antique stores! When I was younger I thought that all antique stores had was old frumpy heavy extravagant wood pieces and out of date items. And that is just not true! Antique stores are a treasure hunt! There are soooo many incredible QUALITY pieces that are actually made out of REAL wood…what a concept huh?!!!?? It’s rare that you can find furniture made out of real wood in stores now days…and if you do (ahem pottery barn & restoration hardware) you pay a pretty penny :/ At antique stores almost ALL the furniture is real wood and just needΒ  a little love. And I’ve found that they are often less expensive that fake wood items you buy at normal decor stores! Steal! {2nd disclaimer: there is nothing wrong with buying fake wood furniture!} I know some people prefer new stuff…and that is totally okay! I have a couple items like this in my home as well. It’s just personally not my favorite and doesn’t last as long from my experience πŸ™‚ Not only can you find awesome furniture finds at antique stores, you can also find unique, one of a kind decor items and wall hangings, etc. Some of my favorite things in my home were from antique stores: my milk glass vases, frames, wall shelves, chalkboard frames, etc.

For all you local people, here are my favorite antique stores in the area: 8th & Main Antiques in chico (my fav!… so big and they even have a whole 2nd shop in the back with more discounted items that just need a little refinishing), Ever After in paradise & Jeannie’s Consignment in paradise. Those should get you started if you’re wanting to venture into the antique world! πŸ˜‰

Other than antique stores, I most definitely have a few favorite chain stores where I find my favorite decor items! I’ll list them here and then go into a little more info below πŸ™‚ FAVS: World Market, Home Goods, Target & TJ Maxx. World market is definitely up there on the list! I just love all their fun, colorful and creative decor items. I love that you can find trendy items, but mix and match the way you display them to create a unique look for your home. And you can often find good deals on things and not break the bank. I mainly go their for knick-knack items and of course curtains! They have the BEST curtains!! I have hunted around A LOT for curtains and they by far have the best selection. Curtains are something that are a little more than other items, but in my opinion when something affects the whole look & feel of a room, it is worth investing in! Other favorite items from there are: pillows (the best!), wall hangings/shelves, frames, vases, dishware, lamps and CLOCKS. All my wall clocks are from there and I love them!

HOME GOODS. Where do I start!!??! The first time I went to home goods years ago I was in LOVE. It was like ross prices, but ALL decor items and amazing ones at that! Seriously, I could spend hours in there and I have! They have EVERYTHING you could want to decorate your house. So many selections and things to choose from and the prices are amazing. I usually do 1-2 home good trips a year. The closest one to me is a couple hrs away…and while I’m bummed we don’t have one, I also think it’s a good thing ($$), haha. I’m sure my hubby is glad we don’t have one here too! πŸ˜‰ My favorite things I have gotten there: rugs, frames, throw blankets, & pillows and storage containers.

I know I’m not alone in my love for target! I’m sure that’s an understatement, haha πŸ˜‰ In the past year target has sure upped their decor game!!! That’s an understatement too. Target use to be somewhere I would occasionally buy frames, candles or towels…but NEVER creative decor items. Now they seem to have an endless supply of amazing decorating items that are 100% on trend and A-MAZING. I often find myself avoiding that area if I know I’m not there for that…or I could get carried away, haha. My favorite things I find there are: string lights, frames, wall hangings, fake plants, vases, etc. And my absolutely favorite gold round mirror is from there and I’m obsessed with it.

A combination of hunting for your favorite decor items at the above stores should give you a good variety and help you stay in budget. I wish I could dissect a room in my home and tell you where each item is from and the cost…just to show you it IS possible to decorate on a budget…and maybe I will! That gives me ideas for a future post πŸ˜‰ If this is something you would like me to do, please shoot me a message or email and let me know! The more feedback I get, the easier it is for me to make decisions on what is best to blog…what you guys want to read!

So there you have it! My favorite decor shops and places I go for inspiration. I hope it was helpful to you and if not at least fun to read πŸ˜‰ I’m sure you’ll be getting many more “home” type posts in the future.. I know I’m not the only one who loves to decorate and has a passion for this! And maybe if you’re someone who is lost in this area, it will give you a little direction πŸ˜‰ Happy friday friends! I have the weekend off and I’m SO excited to spend it with my boys…probably in the pool all day with these cray cray temps, yikes :/
